Elvee/Rosenberg has moved up in my estimation. The other day, I was looking for something specific, but it just wasn’t anywhere (never mind that I wasn’t sure what it was, but I just knew I would know when I found it). I had just come from this new store on 37th St., called City Beads (they are on the expensive side, but they sell some things you don’t see elsewhere, so they are worth a visit. They are more boutique-y than the other bead stores – with few exceptions: you cannot buy just one bead, for example – instead, you must buy a little baggie full of a certain number of that bead. They do have a nice selection of cords, etc. for stringing beads on, or whatever else you can think of). City Beads did not have the one item I had gone there for (I’d been there before and seen it, but they didn’t have it this time).
So, after having gone through about 6 bead stores, I suddenly decided to go into Elvee/Rosenberg. Their street store-front presence is small and dingy, but if you wander around for the 5-10 minutes that it will take you, you can find some things that you don’t see elsewhere (I found surgical steel earring posts and gilder’s paste, which I’ve only seen in one other place, and that place only had two colors). That would have been enough, actually, but the shopkeeper was the most pleasant gentleman I’ve ever run into in a bead store or pretty much anywhere else in NYC (I was almost tempted to ask him if he was married…. he was just such a nice, pleasant man) He asked me if he could help me find something, and, frazzled as I was, I told him I was frazzled and had just come in there to slow down. He ended up selling me a big bag of stuff that I wanted, but, even better, he explained to me that there are different kinds of glue for jewelry than for other glue gun projects. (I didn’t get the gilder’s paste, but, after seeing the card they have there with different elements treated with gilder’s paste – much different from what you usually see when you see gilder’s paste sellers in bead shows, I think I’ll have to get some of that soon).
And that is just the first floor of Elvee/Rosenberg. If you go up to their wholesale 5th floor, they have all sorts of elements you can use to make cool jewelry (being wholesale, they do require you to buy a minimum of each item, so you have to get inspired according to that concept)
I do recommend that you check them out when you are trolling those stores along the 37th St. stretch between Broadway and 5th Avenue.
Now, on to an event that I’ve just come across because Elvee/Rosenberg sent me an email today – there is a CITY SUPPLIER SHOWCASE at FIT on January 15. Who knew? I registered for it via the link in the Elvee/Rosenberg link. See the announcement and Elvee/Rosenberg ad below.
